Rick Jervis is a national correspondent for USA TODAY, based in Austin, Tex., where he covers breaking news, energy and border issues. He’s covered the recent crisis of unaccompanied minors crossing the Southwest border, the Ebola scare in Dallas and the murder trial of the killer of American Sniper Chris Kyle. Rick also recently traveled to Cuba to report on changing relations between Havana and Washington.

Previously, Rick covered the Gulf Coast from New Orleans, reporting on post-Katrina recovery of the region, and was Baghdad Bureau Chief, where he wrote about U.S. military involvement in Iraq, Sunni-Shiite sectarian violence and the Israel-Hezbollah war in southern Lebanon.

Rick was born in Miami to Cuban parents and graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in Journalism. His first reporting job was with the Miami Herald, where he was on a team that won the Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Journalism.
